asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many boys and girls under the age of 16 years were sentenced to borstals in 1983 and to date; and if he will specify the offences by standard category.

Since 24 May 1983 the sentence of borstal training has not been available to the courts and has been replaced by youth custody. The latest available information relates to receptions into prison department establishments and was published for those aged under 17 in Home Office "Statistical Bulletin, Issue 3/84", a copy of which is in the Library of the House. Information on court proceedings in 1983 and 1984 is not yet available.
