HC Deb 25 July 1984 vol 64 cc697-8W
38. Mr. Barron

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will seek to pay an official visit to El Salvador.

Mr. Whitney

My right hon. and learned Friend has no plans to visit El Salvador at present.

64. Mr. Mikardo

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs why Her Majesty's Government abstained on the resolution of the United Nations General Assembly about the peace proposals for El Salvador put forward by the FMNL/FDR on 16 December 1983.

Mr. Whitney

One paragraph of the resolution suggested that the supply of military assistance to a state which has an inherent right of self-defence constituted interference detrimental to human rights in that country. The resolution also failed to take account of the fact that in 1982 a constituent assembly was elected in El Salvador, in elections which most impartial observers agreed were fair and in which 75 per cent. of the electorate voted.
