Mr. Evans

asked the Secretary of State for Employment what was the total number of people in Great Britain employed in manufacturing industry in June 1984; and what were the totals for June 1979 and June 1974.

In May 1984, the latest date for which the information is available, the provisional number of employees in employment in manufacturing industries in Great Britain was 5,480,000. The numbers in June 1979 and June 1974 were 7,127,000 and 7,754,000 respectively. The figures are seasonally adjusted and are based on 1980 standard industrial classification.

The most recent comprehensive figures are from the September 1981 census of employment. At September 1981, there were 16,815,000 employees in full-time employment in Great Britain. No census was taken in 1979 but the corresponding figures for June 1978 and June 1974 were 17,869,800 and 18,186,900 respectively.
