HL Deb 17 July 1984 vol 454 cc1468-9WA
Lord Avebury

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Why an official in the Home Office wrote on 13th December 1983 to solicitors acting for a prisoner whose number is B21753 saying that on 9th August 1983 he was in Swansea Prison but not segregated there, while a letter from Lord Belstead dated 4th November 1983 states that he was segregated from 22nd July to 16th August.

Lord Elton

I understand that the noble Lord is referring to correspondence concerning the prisoner whose number is B27158. I regret that the letter of 13th December 1983 to solicitors acting for the prisoner concerned contained inaccurate information. As I explained in my letter of 4th November 1983, to the noble Lord, the prisoner was located in the segregation unit at Swansea prison throughout the period from 22nd July to 16th August 1983. On 9th February 1984 an official of the Prison Department wrote to the prisoner's solicitors apologising for the error in the earlier letter and confirming that their client had in fact been located in the segregation unit at Swansea on 9th August 1983.
