HC Deb 12 July 1984 vol 63 cc624-5W
Mr. Parry

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he is satisfied with the working of the Merseyside Development Corporation; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Patrick Jenkin

Yes. In its first three years the Merseyside Development Corporation has made an impressive start to the task of regenerating its designated area. The corporation has made great and rapid progress in overcoming the massive dereliction which it inherited, and is now starting to attract substantial private investment. In addition to major projects such as the restoration of the Albert dock warehouses and the international garden festival, a large number of other, less publicised, projects have been either completed or are under way, largely concerned with creating the infrastructure and other improvements necessary for the attraction of private sector investment.

The corporation is continuing to work closely with local authorities and other organisations on Merseyside and to involve and consult with the residents of areas adjacent to the designated area.
