asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what discussions are taking place on the future regime of the Spanish steel industry after the accession of Spain to the European Economic Community.

Steel is one of the main outstanding industrial issues in the Community's accession negotiations with Spain. At the Foreign Affairs Council on 19 June, the Community presented a firm declaration to the Spanish Government stating unequivocally the need for the Spanish steel industry to adhere to a restructuring regime comparable with the Community's own aids code.
