§ Mr. David Youngasked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will investigate delays on motorways due to reductions from three lanes to one; if he will consider earlier sign-posting and methods of making a more orderly transition from one lane to another; and if he will hold discussions with the traffic police on these matters.
§ Mrs. ChalkerThe Transport and Road Research Laboratory has a continuing study of traffic flows and accidents at road works, including the short-term situation where three lanes are reduced to one. Traffic management arrangements, including those aspects raised by the hon. Member, will be reviewed in the light of this study. Discussions are held with the police about the particular traffic management requirements for each major road works site.
