HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 c68W
Mr. Peter Bruinvels

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the current levels of remuneration paid to adjudicators and full-time officials of the supplementary benefits tribunal; how often these levels are reviewed; what are the daily fees paid to the part-time chairmen and members of the supplementary benefit tribunal; and, in each case, how the levels are fixed.

Mr. Newton

The system of social security appeal tribunals, which has replaced supplementary benefit appeal tribunals, includes three levels of full-time judicial appointment, whose salaries this year are subject to a staged increase, as follows:

From 1.4.84 From 1.11.84
£ £
President 33,733 35,000
Regional Chairman 29,870 31,000
Full-time Chairman 27,553 28,500

These salaries are settled with reference to the Top Salaries Review Body awards, and are reviewed at the same time as those awards.

Part-time chairmen of social security appeal tribunals are paid £55 per half-day session. This rate is in accordance with the range of judical fees determined by the Treasury.

Members of these tribunals are unpaid, but may, where appropriate, be reimbursed for loss of earnings.
