HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 cc50-1W
Mr. Allen McKay

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make available to the Sports Council extra grant-in-aid to enable it to underwrite current support from the Greater London council and metropolitan county councils if the proposed abolition measures become effective.

Mr. Macfarlane

As my right hon. Friend announced on 11 April, at column 408 we recognise that some special arrangements will be needed for sport and recreation. A limited extension of central funding is proposed to enable the Sports Council to complement the contribution of the boroughs and districts towards some sports facilities, events and schemes of wider than local interest and to assume full responsibility for the Crystal Palace national sports centre. We are consulting the Sports Council and other organisations on the level of funding that will be required.
