HC Deb 02 July 1984 vol 63 cc43-4W
Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many of Port Stanley's central roads still need repair.

Mr. Raison

It is estimated that within Stanley town boundaries, 3.25 km of surfaced roads require reconstruction or less major patch and fill repairs; and that a further 3.85 km of unsurfaced roads now require surfacing.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether he is satisfied with concrete surfaces on Port Stanley roads.

Mr. Raison

2.285 km of roads in Stanley have been reconstructed in concrete. The surfaces are, I believe, considered satisfactory.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what plans there are to ashpalt the roads in Port Stanley.

Mr. Raison

There are no plans to asphalt roads in Stanley.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what supplement is proposed for the £6.9 million Crown Agents appropriation for roads in Port Stanley.

Mr. Raison

The Crown Agents-Faircloughs roads team finished its assignment at the end of April.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs how many of the 54 Brewster houses in Port Stanley are still unoccupied.

Mr. Raison

27 houses are currently unoccupied.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he hopes to complete sewage, water and electrical services to make all the Brewster houses in Port Stanley habitable.

Mr. Raison

Hard bedrock is delaying completion of site services to the houses on the Callaghan road site in Port Stanley. It is not possible to say how long this work will take to complete.

Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on the shortage of travelling teachers in the Falklands.

Mr. Raison

Recruitment of travelling teachers is a matter for the Falkland Islands Government. I understand that there has been a shortage, but arrangements are now well in hand to recruit replacement teachers.
