Mr. Jim Callaghanasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if it is the intention of Her Majesty's Government to initiate any new moves in Cyprus; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. WhitneyThe Secretary General of the United Nations is currently engaged in consultations with the parties concerned in an effort to make progress over the Cyprus problem. We support these efforts and are ourselves keeping in close contact with those involved. We remain ready to join the Governments of Greece and Turkey in consultations together under the 1960 treaty of Guarantee. A further separate initiative would not be helpful at this stage, but we remain ready to assist the Secretary General in whatever way he considers appropriate.
Mr. Jim Callaghanasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs when he next intends to visit Cyprus.
§ Mr. WhitneyMy right hon. and learned Friend has no immediate plans to do so.
