asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will provide details of the 25 longest serving prisoners in England and Wales, including their names, how long their original sentences were, how long he expects them still to serve, what were they found guilty of and where they are currently imprisoned.

[pursuant to his reply, 18 January 1984, c. 235]: The only information which can be made available from central records is as follows. On 30 November 1983 the 25 prisoners who had spent the longest time under sentence since their initial reception into a prison department establishment in England and Wales were all serving sentences of life imprisonment; four of the prisoners were sentenced to death which was commuted to life imprisonment. All of the 25 had served over 18 years in custody since their sentence. Seven of the 25 had been recalled following an earlier release on licence.
