asked the Secretary of State for Employment (1) how many redundancy notifications were given during the last month for which statistics are available in the Workington travel-to-work area;

(2) how many redundancies in (a) the textile industry, (b) machine tool engineering, (c) general engineering, (d) service trades and (e) steel fabrication work were made in the last month for which statistics are available in the Workington travel-to-work area.

Twenty-two* redundancies were confirmed as due to occur in the Workington travel-to-work area during the month of November, the latest month for which statistics are available, all of them in steel manufacture (MLH 311–312). There were seven advance notifications of redundancies in December 1983, involving 441 redundancies.
