§ Mr. Ralph Howellasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer, pursuant to the reply given to the hon. Member for Norfolk, North on 21 December 1983, Official Report, c. 260, if he will (a) give a breakdown of the individual Departments to which those employees belong, and the total number of employees in each Department for those years and (b) publish for each Department the total salaries paid in each year and the amount of income tax including national insurance contributions levied on those salaries.
§ Mr. HayhoeThe reply cited covered staff of central Government Departments (that is the Civil Service), the 469W NHS, certain other public bodies classified to central Government in the national accounts and local authorities. The total number of employees in each Department is given in "Civil Service Statistics". I regret that the remaining information requested cannot be provided without a disproportionate expenditure of time and resources.
