HC Deb 24 January 1984 vol 52 c494W
Mr. Barry Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Wales how many coalminers were employed in Wales in 1972, 1979 and 1983, respectively.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

Comprehensive figures covering all miners employed in the coal industry are not available. National Coal Board estimates indicate that the average number of men on colliery books in Wales was 36,800 in 1972 and 29,000 in 1979. Comparable figures are not yet available for 1983, but the average for the first nine months was 23,100.
