HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c130W
Mr. Meacher

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the breakdown of the £800 million figure by which he has stated National Health Service expenditure will be increased next year; and what is the basis of his calculation that National Health Service expenditure will increase by 1 per cent. in real terms next year.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

£800 million is the increase for Great Britain. For a breakdown of the increase for England, I refer the hon. Member to my right 'Ion. Friend's reply to my hon. Friend the Member for Hornchurch (Mr. Newton) on 17 November 1983.—[Vol. 48, c.575.] Further details will be provided in this year's public expenditure White Paper. The estimate of a real terms increase is based on the Government's projection of an increase in prices generally of 5 per cent. and the general provision of 3 per cent. for increases in pay rates for staff covered by all central Government programmes.
