HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 cc109-10W
Dr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what is the Government's policy towards energy conservation in the National Health Service; and how much money annually is being allocated for energy-saving measures in the National Health Service.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

It is our policy to encourage and assist the NHS in its energy conservation programmes. This policy includes sponsoring of energy saving projects as examples of good practice, monitoring progress and publishing design and operational information to the NHS.

Records are not kept centrally of the amount spent by the NHS on energy conservation but it has been estimated that between 1974–75 and 1981–82, the latest year for which we have figures available, approximately. £110 million at 1981–82 price levels was invested in energy conservation works by the NHS.
