HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 cc101-2W
Dr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what are the latest figures for (a) the total annual cost of free family planning services, and (b) the discounted cost to the public sector of an average birth.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

In 1981–82 expenditure on family planning provided through the community health services and general medical practitioners is estimated to have been some £55 million. The estimated gross current health and personal social services expenditure per birth in 1981–82 was £995 on average. The Department does not routinely calculate discounted public sector costs of births.
