HC Deb 16 January 1984 vol 52 c116W
Dr. Owen

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what would be the cost of annual breast cancer screening for all women in the 50 to 59 years age group.

Mr. Kenneth Clarke

The information is not available. The Government are funding a major research programme into the efficacy of breast cancer screening at a cost of £0.7 million per annum, which will include an economic appraisal of screening. The initial stages of the trials will be completed in 1987 and preliminary results should begin to be available in 1988.
