HC Deb 29 February 1984 vol 55 cc202-3W
Mr. Litherland

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland what criteria are used before women are strip-searched in prisons (a) in general circumstances and (b) before attending a remand hearing in Scotland.

Mr. Ancram

Female prisoners are strip-searched(a) as part of normal admission and discharge procedures; (b) when being located in the segregation unit; (c) during routine cell searches and special searches authorised by the governor, deputy governor or chief officer where there is reason to believe that a prisoner is concealing contraband; and (d) following "open" visits.

All prisoners who have to attend a court hearing are strip-searched before leaving a prison.
