§ Mr. Kirkwoodasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how many private schools in Scotland benefit from financial concessions as a result of having charitable status; and if he will estimate the loss of Exchequer revenue as a result of such concessions.
§ Mr. Moore[pursuant to his reply, Monday 27 February 1984]: There are 79 private educational establishments in Scotland with charitable status. I regret that information is not available on the total amount of revenue forgone as a result of these establishments' charitable status, but the income tax repaid to them in 1982–83, in respect of covenants, annuities and other income from which basic rate tax had been deducted at source, was some £265,000.
