§ Mr. Maddenasked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1) what consultation there has been between his Department, the World Bank and the British Council on establishing technician colleges in Turkey.
(2) what representations he has received regarding the intention of colleges in the United Kingdom to join a consortium with the World Bank and the British Council to establish technician colleges in Turkey; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. WhitneyThere have been no consultations involving any Government Department. But I understand that the British Council, in the context of its paid educational services programme, has expressed interest to the Higher Education Council in Turkey in providing technical assistance to develop eight technician centres as part of an industrial training project part-funded by the World Bank. The council has therefore invited a number of United Kingdom colleges to assist in the preparation of a proposal.
