HC Deb 27 February 1984 vol 55 c4W
Mr. Stokes

asked the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food if the manufacture, refining, export or import of sugar is subsidised by the Government.

Mr. MacGregor

Support for sugar prices is provided under the common agricultural policy. Direct subsidies, which are limited to sugar produced within quotas, are provided under that policy in the form of export refunds, a contribution towards storage costs, transport and refining subsidies on raw sugar produced within the French Overseas Departments and a subsidy on sugar used by the chemical industry. Imports may be subsidised when world price levels exceed Community prices.
