HC Deb 24 February 1984 vol 54 c649W
Mr. Bevan

asked the Secretary of State for Transport whether he will put more resources into enforcing the law on lorry weights.

Mrs. Chalker

I want to see effective enforcement of the law against overloading. That is a matter for the various enforcement authorities who are rightly not answerable to any Ministers. What I have done is to increase the resources available to the licensing authorities in the field force of traffic examiners and in providing many more weighbridges. I want to make it clear that both prohibitions of overweight lorries and prosecutions are needed for effective enforcement and I will see that prosecutions by licensing authorities are not inhibited by lack of resources.
