HC Deb 23 February 1984 vol 54 c632W
Mr. Carter-Jones

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if it remains his policy that patients shall receive automatic checks for glaucoma when they have their eyes tested or are fitted for new spectacles; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. John Patten

The use of ophthalmoscopy for the detection of glaucoma is part of the routine sight test carried out under the general ophthalmic service and will remain so. A test for glaucoma is not normally carried out when a patient visits an optician only to have new glasses fitted.
