Mr. Kilroy-Silk

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what is the average cost to date in 1982–83 of keeping an inmate for a week in (a) a detention centre, (b) an open youth custody centre, (c) a closed youth custody centre, (d) a local prison, (e) a local prison holding remand prisoners, (f) a category A/B training prison, (g) a category B training prison, (h) a category C training prison, (i) an open prison, (j) a junior remand centre, (k) a senior remand centre and (1) a female establishment.

[pursuant to his reply, 16 January 1984, c. 66]: The information available is not in the precise form requested by the hon. Member. During the financial year 1982–83 the average weekly costs of keeping a prisoner in custody in the following categories were:

Dispersal prisons (Cat. A/B training prisons) 433
Other closed training prisons (Cat. B and C) 205
Local prisons and remand centres 200
Open prisons 158
Borstals and YP centres (including open borstals) 231
Detention centres 211
All-female establishments 308

The average weekly cost for all establishments was £218. The majority of these costs related to staff costs in establishments.
