§ Mr. Adleyasked the Secretary of State for Social Services (1) what steps he is currently taking to warn the general public about dangers to health and risk of heart disease of foods comprising a significant percentage of animal fat; and if he will make a statement;
(2) if, in the light of medical evidence, he will consider requiring manufacturers, purveyors and vendors of foodstuffs likely to induce heart disease to warn the general public of the potential hazard, in the same way as he lays such requirements on tobacco manufacturers; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. John PattenThe Chief Medical Officer's committee on medical aspects of food policy—COMA — has set up an expert panel to study diet and cardiovascular disease. The panel is considering the available scientific evidence, and when it reports, which is expected to be later this year, we shall examine its recommendations in consultation with our right hon. Friend the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food to determine what Government action is required.
