HC Deb 20 February 1984 vol 54 c394W
Mr. D. E. Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Wales, for each year during which a refund has been made to the United Kingdom from the European Economic Community Budget, how much of each refund may be identified as being spent on projects within Wales, and how much of this was spent through other European Economic Community funds such as the European social fund, the regional development fund and the agricultural guidance and guarantee fund.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

The total amount of Community Budget refunds applicable to measures in Wales is as follows:

£ million
1980 Budget 117.7
1981 Budget 10.27
1982 Budget 74.7

The refunds in respect of the 1980 and 1981 Budgets and most of that for the 1982 Budget were applied generally to public sector investment programmes such as trunk roads, railways, water and sewerage and telecommunications. Part of the 1982 refund was allocated to special measures for energy strategy and included support totalling £12.3 million towards the Dinorwig pumped storage scheme, the Dowlais Top to Nantgarw gas pipeline and the Dynevor Arms gas storage project. The refunds are separate from United Kingdom receipts from other Community funds.
