Dr. Cunningham

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish the estimated expenditure per head in 1983–84 of (a) the Metropolitan police, (b) all police authorities except the Metropolitan police, in total, (c) all local authorities in Greater London, excluding the Metropolitan police, and (d) all local authorities outside London, excluding expenditure on police.

The information, based on local authority budgets, is available in the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy publication "Finance and General Statistics 1983–84", copies of which are in the Library.

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will publish the current expenditure per head on police services of each police authority, including the Metropolitan police, in 1983–84, showing the percentage increase in each between (a) 1978–79 and 1983–84 and (b) 1981–82 and 1983–84.

Expenditure by the joint police authorities is shown within the constituent counties' analysis. Information in respect of the 1978–79, service by service, is not readily available.
