HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 c274W
Mrs. Peacock

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will take further steps to ensure that toxic chemicals and other dangerous materials are carried on motorways with complete safety.

Mrs. Chalker

The carriage by road of dangerous substances in bulk is controlled by the Dangerous Substances (Conveyance by Road in Road Tankers and Tank Containers) Regulations 1981. The Health and Safety Commission expects that regulations which will require that dangerous substances are properly packaged and labelled for carriage by road will be made later this year. It will shortly publish a consultative document containing proposals for regulations about the carriage of dangerous substances by road in smaller receptacles such as drums, packages, and so on.
