HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 c274W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he will state the criteria against which he assesses the appropriateness of the level of bus fares in metropolitan areas.

Mrs. Chalker

The level of bus fares in metropolitan areas is for the county council and the PTE to decide, within the constraints of the resources available. The Secretary of State is required to provide guidance on the maximum level of revenue support which he considers appropriate, but the detailed fares implications depend upon operational efficiency and the level of service provided.
