HC Deb 16 February 1984 vol 54 c267W
Mr. Madden

asked the Secretary of State for Employment, in seeking to ensure that all workers significantly exposed to asbestos receive appropriate protection, what definitions of "significantly exposed" and "appropriate protection" are used by the Health and Safety Commission.

Mr. Gummer

It is important, both for the protection of workers and other persons affected by work activities and for the optimum use of resources, that the stringency of precautions matches the degree of risk. It is in this connection that these terms are used. New legislation is being prepared, inter alia, to implement the requirements of two recently adopted European Community directives on asbestos, but details will not be available until the Health and Safety Commission has considered and decided to publish a consultative document.
