§ Mr. Teddy Taylorasked the Chancellor of the Exchequer how much estimated revenue the Treasury will forgo because of relief on mortgage interest in 1983–84; and what estimate he has made of the sum for 1984–85.
§ Mr. Moore[pursuant to his reply, 9 February 1984, c. 741]: The cost of mortgage interest relief in 1983–84 is estimated to be about £2.75 billion. It would be premature to provide an estimate for 1984–85, since the cost will depend on the amounts of mortgage lending and interest rates as well as on the 1984–85 income tax rates and bands.
