(2) what is the cost of checking up on television licences.
§ Mr. HurdTelevision licence inquiry work is carried out both by full-time officers and by others who combine it with unrelated duties. In total they are equivalent to about 900 full-time staff. The cost of making television licence inquiries, operating detector vans and prosecutions in the 1982–83 financial year was some £13.5 million.
