HC Deb 14 February 1984 vol 54 cc148-9W
Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry whether he will introduce a cut-off date to the exemption from the Trade Descriptions (Origin Marking) (Miscellaneous Goods) Order 1981 for goods brought into the United Kingdom before January 1982.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The Trade Descriptions (Origin Marking) (Miscellaneous Goods) (Amendment) Order 1984, which was laid before the House on 8 February, will remove the exemption in the 1981 order for goods first supplied in the United Kingdom before 1 January 1982, with effect from 1 January 1985.

Mr. Pawsey

asked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will include direct mail advertising and mail order catalogues within the Trade Descriptions (Origin Marking)(Miscellaneous Goods) Order 1981.

Mr. Alexander Fletcher

The order already applies to direct sale advertisements other than catalogues. I see no case for extending these requirements, which would impose disproportionate costs and burdens on traders and enforcement authorities.
