§ Mr. Steelasked the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what recent representations he has received about origin marking of cloth in clothing; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Alexander FletcherThe woollen cloth industry has proposed that garments should bear an indication of the origin of the cloth of which they are made; and that the Trade Descriptions (Origin Marking) (Miscellaneous Goods) Order 1981 should be extended accordingly. It would be premature to consider this proposal, which would present serious practical difficulties, pending a ruling from the European Court on the compatibility of the order as it stands with Community law.
