HC Deb 13 February 1984 vol 54 c24W
17. Mr. Ray Powell

asked the Secretary of State for Wales what is the total number of persons unemployed in Wales at present and what were the corresponding figures for May 1979; and if he will list them in the following categories: (a) male and female over 25 years old, (b) male and female 18 to 25-years-old and (c) male and female 16 to 18-years-old.

Mr. Nicholas Edwards

On 12 January 1984 there were 174,707 unemployed claimants in Wales, the comparable figure for May 1979 would have been 77,177. The information is not available in the precise form requested in the second part of the question, but the latest age and duration analysis of unemployed claimants which relates to October 1983 categories the figures as follows:

Males Females
16 to under 18 years 8,208 6,142
18 to under 25 years 35,944 22,191
25 years and over 75,339 21,321

Comparable information in terms of estimates of claimants is not available for 1979.
