Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many claimants have been contacted by the specialist claims unit at his Department's local office in Walsall road, Perry Barr; how many payment books have been called in; how many benefit claims have been withdrawn; and if any prosecutions are pending as a result of the unit's visit to the office.

Dr. Boyson

97 cases were examined during the exercise; benefit ceased in 40 cases and was reduced in 17; 4 cases are under consideration with a view to prosecution.

Mr. Rooker

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services when the specialist claims unit intends to visit the Handsworth local office of his Department in Birmingham.

A specialist claims control exercise commenced in the Handsworth local office on 23 January 1984.

Mr. Gordon Brown

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services if he will list the powers exercised by his Department's specialist claims control investigators, particularly the powers to search premises and conduct surveillance, and in each case the authority under which they are exercised.
