HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 cc430-1W
Mr. Fisher

asked the Secretary of State for Education and Science how many additional science teachers would be required to ensure the provision of science teaching in all primary schools.

Mr. Dunn

The number would depend on local decisions about how to staff science teaching in primary schools. However, my right hon. Friend has drawn attention to the need to give science a firm place in all primary teacher training courses, and to the good opportunities which a career as a primary school teacher offers to those with a specialist knowledge of science. He intends to add science teaching to the priority areas in which he pays grants to local education authorities for the in-service training of teachers.
