HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 c512W
Mr. Boyes

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many convicted juvenile offenders in the 14 to 17-years age group were serving sentences of detention by month from January 1981 to the latest date available.

Mr. Newton

The Department has information about those juveniles who, having been convicted of serious crimes and sentenced under section 53 of the Children and Young Persons Act 1933, are placed in child care establishments for part of their period of detention by arrangement with my right hon. and learned Friend the Secretary of State for the Home Department. Information is not collated routinely on a monthly basis, but the number of young persons aged 14–17 detained in such establishments at 31 December for the last three years was as follows:

Year Number
1981 44
1982 83
1983 65

Information about such juveniles detained in prison department establishments, or who received detention centre, borstal or youth custody sentences, is a matter for my right hon. and learned Friend.
