70. Mr. Dalyell

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what representations were made to him about the construction of Brewster prefabricated houses during his visit to the Falklands in 1983.

Mr. Raison

Occasional concern was expressed about certain aspects of the construction programme but the circumstances following the war were exceptionally difficult. As I saw for myself, the houses under construction are of good quality.

Mr. Arnold

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what detailed plans there are for the further economic development of the Falkland Islands; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Raison

Details of activities to be supported from the £31 million development grant have not yet been finalised. Projects already approved include farm purchase, expansion of the Falkland Islands agricultural research and development centre, school hostel facilities, the establishment of a Falkland Islands development corporation and the establishment of a wool mill and small scale factory estate. Other projects are under consideration.
