§ Mr. Austin Mitchell
asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will allow civil servants who are being deprived of their rights of union membership to give interviews to the media about their reactions to the loss of union membership.
§ Sir Geoffrey Howe
Under existing Civil Service regulations elected departmental trade union representatives are allowed to publicise their union's views on matters which directly affect the conditions of service of members of their union. Other Civil Servants are expected not to participate in public discussion of matters of current or potential political controversy.
