asked the Secretary of State for Transport if he has recently discussed investment in cross-country passenger services with the chairman of British Rail.

On 20 January the chairman of the Railways Board sent my right hon. Friend a proposal for the construction of 100 medium-weight diesel multiple units which could be used for cross-country services. I am examining this proposal and expect to reach a decision shortly.
