HC Deb 06 February 1984 vol 53 c501W
Mr. Wainwright

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services how many children in (a) West Yorkshire, (b) Kirklees and (c) the area covered by the Huddersfield office of his Department are living in families totally reliant on supplementary benefit; and if he will make a statement.

Dr. Boyson

On the assumption that all families on supplementary benfit with children receive Child Benefit, then there are no families totally reliant on supplementary benefit. If it is assumed that the hon. Member means families totally reliant on supplementary benefit and child benefit, the information is not readily available.

Estimates are available of the number of children in all families on supplementary benefit for West Yorkshire and Kirklees. Reliable estimates for August 1983 for local offices are not normally available due to the size of the sample.

Available estimates for August 1983 are as follows:

Number
West Yorkshire 90,000
Kirklees 15,000
