HC Deb 03 February 1984 vol 53 cc412-3W
Mr. Straw

asked the Secretary of State for the Environment (1) pursuant to the answer of 31 January, how much of the £120 million specified as a rough estimate of the scope for savings from the abolition of the metropolitan councils and the Greater London council arises from the savings of 9,000 jobs specified; how much arises from reductions in transport subsidies and how much from other savings; and if he will specify these other savings;

(2) pursuant to the answer of 31 January, whether the £120 million specified as the scope for savings from the abolition of the metropolitan counties and the Greater London council takes account of the costs of the new boards and other bodies which will run those services not transferred to district councils;

(3) pursuant to the answer of 31 January, if, in respect of the £120 million specified as the scope for savings from the abolition of the metropolitan councils and the Greater London council, he will publish tables in the Official Report breaking this figure down by (a) service functions, namely, police, fire, transport, and so on, (b) staff savings by service function and (c) individual metropolitan counties and the Greater London council.

Mr. Waldegrave

I have nothing to add to the answer to the question from the hon. Member on 31 January—[Vol. 53, c.151]—and the answers to my hon. Friend the Member for Broxtowe (Mr. Lester) on 20 December.—[Vol 52, c. 350.]
