HC Deb 03 February 1984 vol 53 c401W
Dr. Roger Thomas

asked the Secretary of State for Social Services what evidence he has about the incidence of hypothermia in the elderly since 1 October 1983 compared with the same period in 1982–83.

Mr. John Patten

There is no firm evidence about the incidence of hypothermia. This is a condition which usually occurs in association with other disorders and diseases amongst elderly people. Information on the number of cases in which hypothermia is mentioned on the death certificate as a main or contributory cause of death is not yet available for the end of 1983; in the quarter ended 31 December 1982 there were 112 such deaths of people aged 65 and over.
