Mr. Hunter

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what are the current rates of reimbursement to members of the Civil Service for travel on Government duty by private transport; on what dates those rates came into operation; when those rates are next likely to be reviewed; and what consultative processes are followed in fixing such rates.

The current rates, dates of operation and review are as follows:

Motor cars:
Standard rate 25.8p a mile for the first 9,000 miles a year; 14p a mile over 9000 miles a year. 1.10.83 1.4.84
Public Transport rate 13.2p a mile for all mileage 1.6.83 1.6.84
Motor cycles:
Standard and Public Transport rates (according to engine cc) 6.4p a mile: 150cc or less 8.6p a mile: 151cc-250cc 12.7p a mile: 251cc and over for all mileage 1.9.81 1.9.84
Pedal cycles: 4.1p a mile for all mileage 1.11.83 1.11.84

The standard motor car rate is payable where use of a private vehicle is in the public interest; the public transport rate is payable where it would be reasonable for an official journey to be made by public transport. All the above allowances are discussed and agreed with the Council of Civil Service Unions.
