HC Deb 02 February 1984 vol 53 c280W
Mr. Wareing

asked the Secretary of State for Transport what representations he has received on the question of abolishing tolls for using the Mersey tunnel; and what action he proposes to take.

Mrs. Chalker

We have received letters from the Merseyside county council and the Liverpool stores committee, and met delegations from both bodies. Tolls at the Mersey tunnels are the responsibility of the county council. We now await its proposals on a possible extension of capitalisation, which must be dealt with before any further consideration of the financial problems of the tunnel.
