HC Deb 02 February 1984 vol 53 c300W
Sir Humphrey Atkins

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs whether, in view of recent developments in Malta, in particular the reported statement by the deputy leader of the Maltese Labour party that Malta should become a one-party state and the signing of a secret agreement between the Maltese Government and the Government of North Korea, he will make a statement on relations between the United Kingdom and the Republic of Malta.

Mr. Whitney

The United Kingdom has a representative in Malta as in most countries and Her Majesty's Government follow developments there closely. Relations between the United Kingdom and Malta are normal. I am aware of reports in the Maltese press of comments made by the deputy leader of the Labour party, but not of a statement in the terms described. Dr. Mifsud-Bonnici has since denied that the Maltese Government wanted a one-party state.
