asked the Secretary of State for Defence if he will implement the main recommendations of the 1980 dockyard study report.

The 1981 defence programme review (Cmnd. 8288) announced major changes in the size of the dockyard organisation and in refit policy for warships. The assumptions on which the 1980 dockyard study report was based have, therefore, changed significantly. However, to the extent that the report advocated the need for greater competition in warship refitting we support that aim and are curently considering the scope for achieving it. In addition, a dockyard efficiency scheme is now in operation, and this accords with one of the recommendations of the 1980 report.
